The Role of Art in Urban Development: Enhancing Community Identity
Melbourne is renowned for its street art, with its iconic graffiti laneways, monuments and sculptures adding a vibrant cultural backdrop to the city. The urban art provides not just a point of interest for locals and tourists to explore but helps to distinguish the city as an artisan hub.
A city’s ever changing street art, colourful murals, landmark statues and installations for special events enhances the community identity as a creative society. In Melbourne’s case, international visitors often visit the city streets and laneways in search of famous art by Banksy, Rone, Steen Jones and Micah Nagle.
Property developer Obaid Naqebullah says it’s often the art in the urban development that creates a location’s identity and unlocks that much touted ‘wow’ factor that defines a suburb.
“In Melbourne, the towering ghostly mural of Drewery Alley, the vista of Venice in Mornane Place and the shifting canvas along the cobbled laneway of Hosier Lane all define the heart and mood of urban Melbourne.”
The 23-metre-high realist mural by artist Adnate forces people to look up as a testament to the power of urban art to shift our perspective and acknowledge our environment. Even one of the last Banksy rats, calls people to lurk in the small corners of the CBD in search of the elusive mark of the renowned urban artist.
In his local City of Kingston, Obaid Naqebullah says urban art festivals like Wall to Wall allow people to appreciate the beauty of their district with fresh eyes, creating pride in the place they call home.
The beloved street festival ignites the vibrant streets of Mordi Village with an explosion of creativity and culture that can inspire confidence and pride in the community.
Curated by the award-winning street art collective Juddy Roller, ten walls were transformed into large scale murals which spotlight Kingston as a community that embraces and supports artists.
The urban art development leaves an exciting legacy – a self-guided art trail that will encourage local and destination visitors to the area.
When it comes to apartment buildings, a foyer, lobby or hallway designed with artistic flair makes for an inviting entrance. It creates a sense of luxury and prestige for residents when they enter the premises.
At the Moor Apartments, an artistic curved façade brings smooth, seamless shapes to the building, which sets it apart in the urban landscape.
The way we adorn our dwellings, our streetscapes, and our urban development makes a huge statement about who we are, and what aspirations we have for the heart and soul of our communities
