What’s Next for Moorabbin Activity Centre? A Look at Future Developments

The City of Kingston has announced future developments for the Moorabbin Activity Centre Zone, which bayside developer Obaid Naqebullah says will solidify the district’s appeal for home buyers.

“Fast becoming a vibrant hub on a short drive from the beach, Moorabbin brims with the energy of new cafés and restaurants, significant new parkland and transport investment to improve traffic flow and connect residents across wider Melbourne,” says bayside property developer Obaid Naqebullah.

The area around and within the Moorabbin shopping centre and train station has been rezoned to the Activity Centre Zone as part of Moorabbin’s multimillion dollar rejuvenation.

The Victorian Planning authority has considered feedback from the community reporting that residents take pride in the beautiful Kingston Arts Centre, love coming together at family-friendly Basterfield Park, and walking the area’s leafy streets. That feedback has helped shape draft plans for Moorabbin to become even greater.

There are big plans to create Moorabbin Station Square over the next few years. The new zone is expected to facilitate increased housing and retail opportunities with the area and will unlock 8 hectares of land for redevelopment.  It is anticipated that approximately 1800 new homes will be built within the Moorabbin Activity Centre Zone over the next 16 years.

Moorabbin Activity Centre including changing traffic flow, improvements to the train station, better pedestrian movement and connection to the activity centre, the train station and the nearby Moorabbin Reserve.  These improvements to the area will support the expected growth of the centre over the long term.

There have already been several large-scale developments approved that provide both commercial and residential uses. After a $5million upgrade of Moorabbin Reserve, AFL football club St Kilda has returned to its iconic sporting ground. The landmark sporting precinct’s redevelopment saw the building of the Danny Frawley centre, comprising a grandstand, a 25m lap pool, hydrotherapy pool and rehabilitation gym, as well as a multi-purpose movement space for schools and community groups. Moorabbin Reserve now features new walking paths to improve pedestrian access within the reserve and connection to surrounding streets, upgraded surfaces on existing paths, new junior playgrounds, picnic and BBQ areas, a new exercise station and an off-leash dog park.

Moorabbin Station has emerged as an activity centre with a cultural focus, with Station Street being transformed into an after-dark neon wonderland during winter – an event called Moorabbin Junction After Dark led by neon light artists and roving entertainers and glow in the dark face painting.

Obaid Naqebullah believes all these development initiatives for Moorabbin will make it the perfect place for a new generation to call home.
